How do you think about walking? You may think about how your heel meets the ground, how your toes push off or how individual joints and muscles move — but walking is more than a series of separate actions. In Core Movement Integration, walking is explored as an integrated, whole-body movement in which the feet, legs, pelvis, spine, shoulder girdle, arms and head work in relationship with one another.
We each develop our own ways of walking over many years, and these familiar patterns become deeply established in the brain and body. Learning to walk differently requires awareness, practice and opportunities to experience movement in new ways.
In this Level II course, participants will use the Six Core Movement Pathways and the four concepts of CMI — Connect, Lengthen, Flow and Uplift — to explore how movement connects from the ground up through the whole body. Walking is first practiced in less familiar, supported positions — including lying down with the feet on a wall and sitting — where habitual walking patterns may be less active. These explorations are then brought into standing and walking.
Participants will experience how weight transfer, pelvic movement, foot contact and arm movement contribute to the flow of each step and explore greater ease in walking. As time permits, we will explore backward walking, changes in speed and environment and ascending and descending stairs.
Through guided movement experiences and practice, participants will develop a CMI-based approach to supporting easier, more integrated walking and a method they can use to help their clients explore new walking patterns.
